In 1993, The Evergreen State College professor Stephanie Coontz shattered myths about family, sex, and marriage with her groundbreaking book, The Way We Never Were. In this talk, local historian Deborah Ross delves into newspaper articles, census data, and archives from early Thurston County to develop a picture of attitudes towards romance, marriage, and sexuality, that, surprisingly, aren't too different from today.
